Horatio Alger South Dakota Scholarship Program  Deadline Oct. 25th; 25, $5,000 scholarships awarded. To be eligible to apply for the Horatio Alger South Dakota Scholarship Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. be enrolled full time as a high school senior in South Dakota, progressing normally toward graduation, and planning to enter college no later than the fall following graduation;
  2. have a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution located in the United States (students may start their studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution);
  3. critical financial need ($50,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is preferred; if higher, an explanation must be provided);
  4. involvement in co-curricular and community activities;
  5. demonstrate academic achievement (minimum grade point average of 2.0);

Coca−Cola Scholars Program Deadline is Oct. 30th.  Seniors in high schools throughout the United States who meet the eligibility requirements may apply each year for one of 250 four-year ($10,000 to $20,000each), achievement-based scholarships.

Applicants must be:

 high school (or home-schooled) seniors attending school in the United States;
• anticipating completion of high school diploma at the time of application;
• planning to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution;
• carrying a minimum 3.00 GPA at the end of their junior year of high school.

Apply from Oct. 1 to April 2, 2012, if you will be attending Southeast Tech in Sioux Falls next fall.

Most Valuable Student Scholarship (Elks National Foundation) -
Dec. 1st Deadline; will award 500, 4-year scholarships nationally; need not be related to an Elks member; judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need.

SD Farmers Union Foundation - open to applicants whose parents are member of SD Farmers Union; open to seniors or post-secondary students who will be attending a post-secondary school in South Dakota; 3 - $500 scholarships will be awarded; Dec. 1st deadline.

Dr. Pepper Tuition Giveaway - Must be 18 years old & upload a 1 minute video by 12/31 for a chance to win a $2,500.

AXA Achievement Scholarship - looking for students who have been active in their communities, and/or overcome personal challenges; 2 types available:

The AXA Community Scholarship Program brings advice and access to higher education into every community in which AXA has a presence. Every AXA Advisors' branch office nationwide distributes up to twelve $2,000 scholarships to high school seniors who live and attend high school in their area.  Dec. 15th deadline

The AXA Achievements Scholarship in association with U.S. News & World Report   provides $670,000 in annual scholarships to young people throughout the nation.  Fifty-two State winners – one from each state, the District of Colombia and Puerto Rico – are selected by our nonprofit partner, Scholarship America, to receive one-time scholarship awards of $10,000 each. Black Hills Stock Show Foundation Scholarship - will be awarding (6) $2,000 scholarships to graduating seniors from SD,ND,MT, WY, or NE who plan to attend a post-secondary school in one of those states. An application form & more info. can be found at www.bhssf.com. Dec. 15th deadline.

Applications are due Dec. 22, 2011
  Scholarship recipients will have the chance to spend one week of their summer digging deep into the science that is planned for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Lab at Homestake, based in Lead, SD. They will spend three weeks studying physics at Princeton University in New Jersey under world-renowned scholars and researchers. Funding permitting, they will spend a week in Italy, at the Gran Sasso Laboratory, to get a feeling for the dynamic research environment that will be DUSEL in the future. Coursework will cover physics, plus a variety of other science and engineering topics. Participants will have the opportunity to interact and learn from distinguished professors from all over the world. College credit will be offered.
    Eligibility Requirements:  Candidates must:
- Be age 18 or older at time of travel
- Be a high school senior or college freshmen at time of application
- Attend a South Dakota public, private or home school or postsecondary institution or have graduated from a South Dakota high school - Have a demonstrated interest in science with the intent of pursuing an advanced degree in a math, science, engineering or technology field
- Preference will be given to those students completing advanced math and science courses
- Students may only participate in the five-week scholarship program once

US JCI Senate Foundation Scholarship Program - Jan. 15th deadline:  2 - $200 state winners who are forwarded on to the national competition; application & More info.

Modern Woodman Insurance College Scholarship Program - High-school seniors who are Modern Woodmen members can apply for one of 39 scholarships and 100 additional awards presented annually. Must be a beneficial member of Modern Woodmen for at least two years as of Sept. 30 of his or her graduating year of high school. Deadline - Jan. 1

USD Online Academic Scholarship Application - will be open from Oct. 25th through Jan. 13th; students submit one application and they will automatically be considered for all participating scholarship; students are required to have letters of recommendations provided through email; also can get an estimate of what you might receive from USD (under Coyote Commitment Scholarship Program)

SDSU Online Academic Scholarship Info. & Application -

  1. One form is all you need to be considered for all academic scholarships available at SDSU. (Talent scholarships for athletics and music and ROTC scholarships require a separate application process.)
  2. Return your scholarship application to the Admissions Office.  We accept scholarship applications throughout the year, but we strongly encourage you to have yours in by January 15 of your senior year to receive priority consideration for all awards.

Essay competition sponsored by the SD Securities & Exchange Commission - Not a scholarship but a cash prize awarded to Seniors who research and write an essay on Investment Safety; 2 prizes each of $5,000, $3,000, $2,000 & $1,000 will be awarded. Burger King Scholars Program - $1,000 to $25,000 scholarships available to high school seniors and also their employees; application period is Nov. 15th through Jan. 10th.

National MS Society's Scholarship Program — to help highly qualified students who have been diagnosed with MS or who have a parent with MS achieve their dreams of going to college. In 2010 nearly $1 million was awarded to 470 scholars.  (Info. & Application)

February Deadlines

$1000 iHELP™ SCHOLARSHIP South Dakota - Sponsored by the Student Loan Finance Corp. in Aberdeen; Determined by a random drawing; Feb. 29th deadline; 5 - high school seniors; also iPad drawing;  (click here for more info. on private student loans)

In order to qualify* for the iHELP Scholarship, the applicant must be a:

bulletHigh school senior or enrolled at least half time in a 2 or 4 year public or private school.

Dakota Corps Scholarship - for tuition & fees at a participating college in SD. Feb. 1st - deadline.

Graduate from an accredited South Dakota high school with a Grade Point Average (GPA of) 2.8 or greater on a 4.0 scale. 


Have a composite ACT score of 24 or greater (or the SAT equivalent).


Agree, in writing, to stay in South Dakota and work in a critical need occupation after graduation for as many years as the scholarship was received, plus one year.


Apply for the Dakota Corps Scholarship for a school period that begins within one year of high school graduation, or within one year of release from active duty of an active component of the armed forces.  


Attend a participating South Dakota college as an undergraduate student in a program that will prepare the student to work in a critical need occupation.


Best Buy Scholarship Program - Grade 9 -12 students are legible; Scholarships are awarded to students who volunteer time to their communities, excel in academics, and participate in extra curricular activities. The application must be completed electronically online; Feb. 15th - deadline.


ESA Foundation Scholarships - go to their website and print the application. Then go back to items under ESA Foundation Scholarship and click on the Current List of ESAF Scholarships available by State.  Click on STATE to learn which scholarships are applicable for STATE residents.  Print the list.  The student may apply for 3 scholarships.  Each will need a full set of documents and fees.  The completed application with all of the documentation must be submitted to me by February 1st to be considered for this academic year.  Please mail to Box 387, Winner, SD 57580. Through the World Class program, Mediacom will award $1,000 leadership scholarships to winning applicants. Applications for the World Class scholarships can be downloaded by clicking on this link. Applications and references much be received by February 15th to be considered.

Marion T. Wood Scholarship (SD Assn. of Educational Office Professionals) - 1 - $500 Scholarship for a student that intends to continue in an office-related business program. Feb. 15th - deadline. Criteria: Complete Forms 2 & 3; One-page essay entitled “Why I am Choosing an Office-Related Career or Vocation” ; official high school transcript; Three letters of recommendation from non-family or non-SDAEOP members; All forms should be keyboard generated.

Ford/Cargill/Monsanto Scholarships - More than 1,000 scholarships w. just one application; Feb. 22nd deadline; do not need to be an FFA member to apply. The Ardell Bjugstad Scholarship Program for Native American Students provides support for freshman Native American students who are pursuing studies in agribusiness, agricultural production, agricultural sciences, or a natural resources degree at any postsecondary institution.

The Annis Irene Fowler/Kaden Scholarship is awarded to first-time entering freshman at BHSU, DSU, NSU or USD and who will select elementary education as their major field.  Special consideration is given to students with demonstrated motivational ability, a disability, or who are self-supporting.

USA Funds® Access to Education Scholarships - will award $1,500 scholarships to students with economic need (Have an annual adjusted gross family income of $35,000 or less); Applications will be accepted online beginning Dec. 15 through Feb. 15. Additionally, up to 50 percent of the scholarship awards will be targeted to applicants who are members of an ethnic-minority group or have a documented physical disability. The program will award scholarships of $1,500. The scholarships are non-renewable.  Students may reapply each year they meet eligibility requirements. Students may receive no more than a total of $6,000 in scholarship awards.

Scholarship awards will be based on the applicant’s:

  1. Past academic performance and future potential.
  2. Leadership and participation in school and community activities.
  3. Work experience.
  4. Career and educational aspirations and goals.
  5. Unusual personal or family circumstances.



The South Dakota Education Association/NEA awards scholarships to outstanding students who are planning on entering the teaching profession . The Association may annually award up to three $750 scholarships for each academic year. Feb. 15th Deadline

Criteria for application includes that the student must:

1.             Be the daughter or son of an active or retired SDEA/NEA member.
2.             Be in the top quarter of his/her class as of January, 2011.
3.             Be a student in a South Dakota public education institution.
4.             Be accepted and/or enrolled in a South Dakota college or university.




March Deadlines

Mitchell Technical Institute - Some new Scholarship opportunities; 1. Star Scholars - for students w. an ACT Score of 24 or higher and a 3.0 GPA, the student will recieve $1,000 for the first sem.  If you are enrolled in one of their 10 spotlight programs, it could be $2,000.  2. MTI Legacy - if you have a parent/grandparent/or sibling that graduated from MTI, or is currently attending, you can earn up to $1,000. No deadline for these.

 MTI’s Spring Scholarship Application for students beginning classes Fall 2011 is now available.  Along with our other scholarships, there are ten $500 MTI Staff Scholarships available and ten $500 MTI Edge Scholarships available for the upcoming fall semester.  March 14th deadline. South Dakota Agri-Business Association is accepting applications for THREE $1000 Scholarships to Students Majoring in Agriculture. P.A. Y. (Yankton Ag Business) Scholarship - 1 - $1,000 scholarship for for graduating seniors going into a Ag related field. It can be a technical school or a 4 year degree. Mar. 1st deadline.  Info. & Application

Clay County Youth Trust Fund - several scholarships for students who live in Clay Co.; mainly 4-H related, but the Centennial Scholarship (p.9) is open to non 4-H students. Application

 First PREMIER Bank and PREMIER Bankcard have been funding brighter futures for graduating high school seniors and college students in our communities. That’s why we are once again honored to offer area high school seniors the opportunity to apply for one of 18 scholarships for $1,000 to be awarded in 2014.

Sioux Falls Area Foundation Scholarships - These scholarships are open to students from Minnehaha, Lincoln, Turner, and McCook counties and communities within a 75-mile radius of Sioux Falls who plan to attend a four-year college or university or technical school.  Variety of scholarships available, most w. a March 15th deadline.  (more info. & applications)

Minnesota Timberwolves FastBreak Foundation - Available to students in MN, ND, & SD; 5 - $2,000 scholarships;  Ř  Must attend a college or university;  Must have a minimum 19 ACT score and 3.0 G.P.A; Must participate in extracurricular activities; Must complete 45 hours of community service, outside of school, during the course of the academic school year. Deadline - March 6th.


The Kohl’s Kids Who Care® Scholarship Program - recognizes and rewards young volunteers (ages 6-18) who help make their communities a better place to live.


Associated General Contractors of SD - range from $250 - $3,500 for Construction Mngt., Civil Eng., or other approved programs for SD. Mar 5th deadline.


Youth Scholarship Program for Young People Who Are Cancer Patients/Survivors - Midwest Division of the American Cancer Society; Mar. 15th deadline; more info. & application.


"Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year" (SAMMY) Award Program - 25 National winners will receive a $7,500 college scholarship and other perks. The National President's scholarships - are awarded to children of veterans who served in the Armed Forces during the eligibility dates for The American Legion. One $2,500 scholarship, one $2,000 scholarship, and one $1,500 in scholarship money will be awarded in each division. Fifteen outstanding students will be awarded a total of $30,000 to further their higher education. The applicant must complete 50 hours of community service during his/her high school years to be eligible for one of these scholarships.

Associated General Contractors of SD, Highway-Heavy-Utilities Chapter (AGC) - for students enrolling in a construction related field at a college/university or technical institute; must obtain a signature from a AGC member; May 1 - deadline. Application & More info.


Sanford Vermillion Medical Center in partnership with Dakota Hospital Foundation is excited to offer a minimum of two scholarships for the 2009-2010 academic school year to area high school seniors who are planning to pursue a career in a health care profession at the University of South Dakota. April 20th - deadline


SD Retailers Association - for students intending to enroll in a retail or business-related course of study at a vocational/technical school or college or who plan to have their own business in the future; a total of $8,100 was awarded to thirteen students for the 2011-12 school year; April 13th deadline.


Lewis & Clark Home Builders Association Scholarship - This annual $500 scholarship was established to benefit graduating high school seniors who will attend an accredited school and major in a construction-related field. (Application)

Ken Austin Memorial Educational Fund - Minn./SD Equipment Dealers Assn.; April 15th - deadline; awarded to students who will be enrolled in a technical school program that will lead to or enhance a career in a dealership.  Need paper application from Ms. Knudson.


MTI’s Spring Scholarship Application for students beginning classes Fall 2011 is now available.  Along with our other scholarships, there are ten  $500 MTI Edge Scholarships available for the upcoming fall semester.  The Edge Scholarships are just for 2011 grads.  The scholarship application along with additional information about the scholarships can be found at www.mitchelltech.edu/alumni/mtifoundation/MTIscholarships.

The South Dakota Association for Career and Technical Education (SDACTE) awards scholarships each year to deserving students who are continuing their education in the area of career and technical education field.  Application


Air Force ROTC Scholarships -  the final day for seniors to submit an application for a HSSP (High School Scholarship) is the 1st of December.  Students do not have to wait until they have retaken their ACTs to fill in the application as they can modify/edit them anytime after they begin the process.  The HSSP is a very lucrative scholarship which offers unlimited tuition, fees, $900.00 annually for books, and a monthly stipend.  There is no obligation for this scholarship until the 1st day of the sophomore.  Anytime after that, there must be a commitment.  The application can be found on our website at www.afrotc.com

bulletUSD Career Service Scholarship - Deadline for applications is March 20th; 4 Scholarships awarded each year; must be accepted at USD; 2.0 GPA or higher; must a child of a USD Career Service Employee. Application.

South Dakota Firefighters Association - Criteria: Any child or grandchild of any member (living, deceased or retired) of a fire department in South Dakota; A high school senior or student entering their first semester of college; The applicant must be sponsored by a fire department that has 100% membership in the SD Firefighters Association for the current year; The applicant may also be sponsored by a member of the SD Firefighters Auxiliary, a local fire department auxiliary or a member of the Dear Old Timers; The scholarship may be used at a South Dakota college, or Post Secondary institution (Vo-Tech), but may be used in the field of fire science outside of South Dakota; Deadline:  April1st.
